Occurrence description
Buiten broedtijd
Steenuilen zijn bijzonder plaatstrouw. Zelfs jonge vogels vertonen weinig neigingen om zich meer dan enkele tientallen kilometers te verplaatsen. Steenuilen worden buiten de broedtijd dan ook bijna altijd in de omgeving van de broedplaatsen gezien. Waarnemingen op grotere afstand, bijvoorbeeld op de Waddeneilanden, zijn erg zeldzaam.
Broedtijd
De verspreiding is in hoofdzaak beperkt tot het kleinschalige cultuurlandschap van Oost-, Zuid- en Midden-Nederland. De hoogste dichtheden komen voor in delen van het rivierengebied en het oosten van Gelderland. In het westen en noorden van het land is de Steenuil tussen 1975 en 2000 op veel locaties verdwenen. Elders zijn de aantallen in dezelfde periode afgenomen. Sindsdien nemen ze in het rivierengebied verder af, zijn ze op de zeeklei stabiel en herstellen ze licht op de zandgronden. De afname houdt verband met vermindering van nestgelegenheid (knotwilgen, schuurtjes) en voedsel (door intensivering van het agrarisch grondgebruik). Na koudere en sneeuwrijke winters zakken de aantallen soms tijdelijk in, soms ook niet.
