Buiten broedtijd
In najaar en winter vormen Fazanten groepjes die op plekken met veel voedsel en dekking samenscholen. Zulke plekken liggen doorgaans op slechts enkele honderden meters van de broedplaats. Grotere verplaatsingen lijken niet voor te komen. De wintergroepen vallen in het vroege voorjaar uiteen.
Broedtijd
Fazanten komen in grote delen van Nederland voor maar ontbreken in stedelijk gebied en bosrijke omgeving. Ze zijn het talrijkst in agrarisch gebied op de kleigronden van Zuidwest- en Noordoost-Nederland. Rond 1975 kwamen Fazanten nog wijd verspreid voor op de Veluwe en in andere bosachtige gebieden. De verdwijning hier, en de scherpe afname op veel plaatsen elders, is een gevolg van het vanaf 1978 geleidelijk afbouwen van het uitzetbeleid. De onnatuurlijk hoge dichtheden die daarvan het gevolg waren, verdwenen als gevolg van predatie door Vos en Havik, iets dat versneld werd door enkele strenge winters. De afname vlakt inmiddels af en de soort weet zich in verschillende delen van het land te handhaven, zij het in lagere dichtheden dan weleer. Illegale uitzet komt overigens nog steeds voor.
Birds directive
Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Common Pheasant.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Common Pheasant in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle waarnemingen, met nadruk op territoriale man (schorre roep gevolgd door vleugelroffel; heeft vaak verschillende roepplekken binnen territorium) en aanwijzingen voor nest: op korte afstand met veel geraas uit dichte vegetatie opvliegende hen (vaak van legsel opgestoten) of hen met jongen (bij verstoring alle kanten uitvliegend en met veel piepen weer bij elkaar komend; tel alleen families met jongen die niet meer dan hooguit enkele tientallen meters kunnen vliegen).
LET OP: soort is verstoringsgevoelig. Verlaat onmiddellijk de omgeving van een toevallig gevonden nest.

Bijzonderheden
Territoriale haan heeft vaak verschillende hennen (maar niet altijd bij eenmaal volledig ingeburgerde populatie). Tel het aantal hanen als maat voor de fazantenstand. Bij toevallige waarnemingen van harems het aantal hennen per harem noteren.
Broedbiologie
Broedt in open tot halfopen landschappen met veel dekking. Eileg begin april tot eind juni, incidenteel later. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 8-12 eieren, broedduur 23-26 dagen, jongen nestvlieders die met 12 dagen stukjes kunnen vliegen en na 10-12 weken zelfstandig zijn.
