Buiten broedtijd
Pas in de jaren zeventig en tachtig van de twintigste eeuw werd duidelijk dat de Grauwe Pijlstormvogel een schaarse maar regelmatige doortrekker is. Bij krachtige aanlandige winden passeren tientallen tot honderden exemplaren de zeetrektelposten op de Nederlandse kust. De waarnemingen vallen vrijwel per definitie in de periode juli-november, met de piek gewoonlijk tussen half september en eind oktober. Waarnemingen buiten de kuststrook zijn extreem zeldzaam.
