Buiten broedtijd
Midden twintigste eeuw waren Bonte Kraaien in winter en trektijd in het hele land een normale verschijning. Er moeten tienduizenden vogels in ons land overwinterd hebben. Al vanaf 1940 werd echter gesproken over afname en deze zette door tot op de dag van vandaag. Bonte Kraaien uit Scandinavië, Rusland en de Baltische Staten trekken nauwelijks meer naar West-Europa, vermoedelijk doordat de voedselomstandigheden in hun broedgebieden in de loop van de twintigste eeuw steeds beter werden en de noodzaak tot wegtrekken verdwenen is. Momenteel zijn er geen vaste overwinteringsplekken meer in Nederland. Het gaat alleen nog maar om enkele overwinterende exemplaren per jaar. Op trek wordt de soort ook nog maar weinig gezien. De schaarse zomerwaarnemingen betreffen niet-broedende overzomeraars (naast incidentele broedparen, zie onder).
Broedtijd
De Bonte Kraai was de hele twintigste eeuw een zeldzame broedvogel in ons land en wordt er alleen maar zeldzamer op. Incidenteel worden broedgevallen geconstateerd, meestal op de Waddeneilanden. Het betreft zelden 'zuivere' paren maar doorgaans mengparen met Zwarte Kraai of vogels met hybride kenmerken. Het nagenoeg verdwijnen uit Nederland past binnen de inkrimping van het Noord-Europese broedareaal en valt samen met een sterke afname van Bonte Kraaien als wintergast en doortrekker.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Hooded Crow.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Hooded Crow in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alert zijn bij late voorjaarswaarnemingen van (meng)paar [broedcode 3], letten op nestbouw [brc 9], bezet nest [brc 13] (mannetje houdt wacht bij broedend vrouwtje, staart steekt over nestrand), alarm [brc 7] en voedseltransport [brc 14] (mannetje voedt vrouwtje dat broedt of kleine jongen heeft, pas als jongen 1 week oud zijn gaan beide ouders voedsel zoeken). Speciale aandacht op Waddeneilanden.
LET OP: scherp opletten op verenkleed van beide geslachten. Nederlandse broedvogels vertonen vaak hybride kenmerken. Pas op voor late doortrekkers, overzomeraars en niet-broedende vogels (soort broedt meestal pas in het derde jaar); deze vertonen geen nestgedrag.

Uitgebreide documentatie noodzakelijk. Beschrijf samenstelling paar: zuivere Bonte Kraaien, Bonte Kraai en Zwarte Kraai dan wel (een of beide vogels) hybriden Zwarte x Bonte Kraai.
Broedbiologie
In Nederlandse situatie meestal nestelend in open tot halfopen terrein, doorgaans agrarisch cultuurland of duingebied. Eileg in april of begin mei. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 3-6 eieren, broedduur 17-22 dagen, nestjongenperiode 30-36 dagen, jongen na uitvliegen nog tot 5 weken verzorgd.
