Buiten broedtijd
Als echte standvogel vertoont de Kuifmees zich zelden buiten zijn broedgebied. Incidentele waarnemingen op bijv. de Waddeneilanden geven echter aan dat een enkele vogel enige zwerflust kent.
Broedtijd
De broedverspreiding van Kuifmezen overlapt in hoge mate met de verspreiding van dennen. Buiten een min of meer gesloten areaal op de hoge zandgronden komt de soort alleen voor in de Hollandse duinen en op geïsoleerde plekken elders. De verspreiding blijft al tientallen jaren gelijk, al kunnen kleine populaties verschijnen en weer verdwijnen. De landelijke aantallen profiteerden van bosveroudering en minder intensief bosbeheer en namen toe tot omstreeks 1985. Sindsdien groeien ze niet verder en vertonen ze neigingen tot afname. Het omzetten van naaldbosaanplant in natuurlijker loofbos is nadelig voor deze soort.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the European Crested Tit.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the European Crested Tit in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle waarnemingen, met nadruk op roepende en zingende vogels (roepjes rollend 'pürr', 'zang' bestaat uit serie roepjes met andere tussengeluidjes; wordt door beide partners voortgebracht!), paartjes (baltsvoedering komt voor) en aanwijzingen voor nest: nestbouw (hakt zelf nest uit in morsige boom, veelal berk, of benut bestaande holte inclusief nestkast), transport van voedsel (mannetje voert broedend vrouwtje, beide partners voeren jongen) en ontlastingspakketjes.
LET OP: territoria kunnen groot zijn en territoriaal gedrag is niet zodanig sterk dat altijd duidelijk is of twee (of meer) Kuifmezen bij elkaar horen dan wel rivalen zijn. Vliegvlugge jongen vanaf begin juni kunnen met territoriumbezitter verwisseld worden (waarneming alleen gebruiken als er eerdere waarnemingen ter plekke waren).
Bijzonderheden
Bezet jaarrond een territorium dat verdedigd wordt bij voortdurend patrouilleren. In de winter komen groepsterritoria voor die met de territoria van individuele paren kunnen overlappen. In de broedtijd en in het bijzonder tijdens het voeren van nestjongen kunnen de territoria van paren krimpen tot eentiende van de oorspronkelijke oppervlakte.
Broedbiologie
Volledig gebonden aan naaldbos, in het bijzonder dennenbos. Eileg van eind maart tot half juni, met piek half april-half mei. Een tot twee broedsels per jaar, meestal 5-8 eieren, broedduur 15-17 dagen, nestjongenperiode 19-21 dagen, uitgevlogen jongen worden nog enige tijd gevoerd.
