Buiten broedtijd
Nederlandse Staartmezen zijn standvogels die buiten de broedtijd rondzwerven in familiegroepjes. Ze komen dan mondjesmaat ook in gebieden waar ze niet broeden, vooral in oktober. De Noord-Europese ondersoort Witkopstaartmees, met geheel witte kop en scherp afgetekende nekband, verschijnt slechts bij uitzondering in ons land. Overigens broeden heel wat witkoppige Staartmezen bij ons; groepen van uitsluitend witkoppige vogels (duidend op Witkopstaartmees) zijn zeldzaam.
Broedtijd
Staartmezen zijn op de hoge gronden gewone broedvogels in bossen, tuinen en parken met voldoende ondergroei. In het westen en noorden van het land bleef het voorkomen lange tijd grotendeels beperkt tot de duinen, moerasbos en stedelijk gebied. In het laatste kwart van de twintigste eeuw heeft de soort zich hier uitgebreid dankzij uitbreiding van steden en bosaanplant in voorheen open landschap. De soort lijkt weinig last te hebben van koude winters, tenzij die met veel ijzel gepaard gaan. De landelijke aantallen namen om onbekende redenen af in de jaren negentig en schommelen sindsdien op lager niveau.
Birds directive
Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Long-tailed Tit.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Long-tailed Tit in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Paar in broedbiotoop (vooral waarnemingen in april belangrijk) en aanwijzingen voor nest: nestbouw (nest vooral in vroege voorjaar vaak goed zichtbaar), alarm (drukke variant van pruttelende contactroep; o.a. bij Gaai in omgeving nest), transport van voedsel of ontlastingspakketje (beide partners).
LET OP: paarvorming vindt plaats in (territoriale) wintergroepen die over vele tientallen hectares (soms meer dan 100) rondzwerven. Paren zonderen zich aan het eind van de winter/vroege voorjaar geleidelijk meer van groep af en gaan op zoek naar nestplek. Soort heeft geen duidelijk ontwikkeld territoriaal gedrag (behalve rond eileg, vlakbij nest) en kent evenmin duidelijke zang. Uitgevlogen jongen kunnen flinke omzwervingen maken met hun ouders. Jongen met korte staartjes zijn uit de directe omgeving afkomstig, jongen met staartjes die voor meer dan tweederde volgroeid zijn kunnen van elders zijn.
Bijzonderheden
Veel nesten zitten opvallend of worden door het opvallende aan- en afvliegen van ouders verraden aan predatoren. Nesten die succesvol zijn, leveren echter veel jongen op! Voerende ouders worden niet zelden bijgestaan door een of meer volwassen vogels (met familieband), wat het uitvliegsucces en de overleving van uitgevlogen jongen verhoogt.
Broedbiologie
Broedt in allerlei bostypen en andere landschappen met veel struiken of dichte jonge bomen. Eileg van eind maart tot half mei, piek in april. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 8-12 eieren, broedduur 12-14 dagen, nestjongenperiode 18-19 dagen, jongen worden na uitvliegen nog minstens 2 weken gevoerd.
