Occurrence description
Buiten broedtijd
De Nederlandse Ooievaars trekken deels weg, maar minstens een vijfde overwintert in eigen land. Deze vogels zoeken bij sneeuw en vorst de bebouwde kom op of bezoeken speciale voerplaatsen. De weggetrokken vogels komen vanaf februari terug. Voorjaarstrek, deels van Deense en Duitse Ooievaars, vindt plaats van half maart tot half mei, vaak in twee gescheiden pieken. De wegtrek duurt van juli tot in oktober, met de meeste trek in augustus. Trekgroepen van soms meer dan een honderdtal Ooievaars strijken dan neer op gemaaide graslanden en overnachten wel eens op gebouwen.
Broedtijd
De Ooievaar was rond 1910 een bekende verschijning, met landelijk tenminste 500 broedparen. Na een decennia lange afname, vooral een gevolg van intensiever agrarisch grondgebruik, waren er rond 1970 maar 10 paren over. Het fokken, uitzetten en bijvoederen van Ooievaars, begonnen in 1969, wierp na een lange aanloop vruchten af. De stand herstelde niet alleen, maar groeide zelfs tot meer dan 800 paren. De betrokken vogels, merendeels afstammelingen van het fokproject, vertonen in toenemende mate weer 'wild' gedrag. Zo trekt het merendeel van de jonge vogels weg. De verspreiding, lange tijd sterk geconcentreerd rond de voormalige fokcentra, wordt geleidelijk ruimer. Ook in Oost- en Zuid-Nederland broeden tegenwoordig Ooievaars. Over de grens in Duitsland is eenzelfde ontwikkeling gaande als in Nederland.
Birds directive
Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the White Stork.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the White Stork in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle door paren bezette nesten tellen [broedcode 13, 15, 16], ook indien broedpoging niets oplevert; nesten die door een solitaire vogel worden bezet niet meetellen. Bewoonde nesten zijn herkenbaar aan broedende ouder, jonge vogels op nest, verse uitwerpselen, voedsel of eischalen op of onder nest. Vraag bij twijfel over bewoning na bij omwonenden.
Bijzonderheden
Soort wordt intensief gevolgd door de Stichting Ooievaars Research & Knowhow (STORK). Bij twijfel of nestplaats al bekend is: aan Sovon doorgeven. Sovon onderhoudt contacten met STORK.
Broedbiologie
Nesten zijn groot en opvallend in bomen en op gebouwen of andere constructies. Bij toegenomen dichtheden broeden paren soms op een nest op een afgebroken populier midden in een bosperceel. Eileg vooral in april. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 3-5 eieren, broedduur 33-34 dagen, nestjongenperiode 55-60 dagen, jongen worden daarna nog 7-20 dagen gevoerd.
