Buiten broedtijd
Buiten de broedtijd zijn Goudhaantjes veel minder gebonden aan naaldhout. Op trek en in de winter verschijnen ze ook in loofbossen, stadstuinen en beplanting in boerenland. De Nederlandse Goudhaantjes, vermoedelijk standvogel, krijgen gezelschap van vogels uit Noord- en Oost-Europa. Hun toestroom, vooral in oktober, kan jaarlijks enorm variëren. In sommige najaren neemt de trek massale proporties aan, zoals in 1975, 1983, 1989, 2008 en 2015. De winteraantallen vertonen minder grote fluctuaties. Van doortrek wordt in het voorjaar amper iets gemerkt, het meest nog in maart.
Broedtijd
In de broedtijd zijn Goudhaantjes vrijwel alleen te vinden in naaldbos, in het bijzonder sparrenbos. De dichtheden zijn dan ook het hoogst waar veel sparrenbos te vinden is, zoals op de Veluwe, de Utrechtse Heuvelrug en in Drenthe. De landelijke verspreiding is sinds 1975 in wezen onveranderd, op het lokaal verschijnen en verdwijnen van kleine populaties in marginale biotopen na. De aantallen worden deels gestuurd door de strengheid van de winter; een hoog populatieniveau wordt bereikt na series van zachte winters, terwijl streng winterweer soms (maar lang niet altijd) resulteert in een populatie-crash. Los daarvan is de tendens tot omvorming van het bos (in dit geval sparrenplantages vervangen door natuurlijker loofbos) ongunstig voor deze soort, evenals de sterfte van fijnsparren als gevolg van toenemende droogte. Waarschijnlijk zijn deze ontwikkelingen belangrijke oorzaken van de recent stevige afname in Nederland.

The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Goldcrest.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Goldcrest in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Zang [broedcode 2] (hoog en voor sommigen moeilijk hoorbaar, in schemer vaak overstemd door andere vogelsoorten), overige relevante waarnemingen (nestbouw [brc 9], voedseltransport [brc 14] etc.) vaak moeizaam te vergaren door verblijf in donker naaldhout, vaak hoog in kronen.
LET OP: doortrek mogelijk tot in mei, waarbij op trek gezongen kan worden.
Broedbiologie
Gebonden aan naaldbos, met voorkeur voor sparren. Veel minder in gemengd bos dan Vuurgoudhaan, en ontbrekend als broedvogel in loofbos. Eileg van eind maart tot in juli. Twee broedsels, resp. vanaf eind maart/begin april en vanaf half juni. Meestal 5-13 eieren, broedduur 14-17 dagen, nestjongenperiode 18-22 dagen. Soms ineengeschoven broedsels (vrouwtje broedt eieren uit en gaat nieuw nest maken, mannetje neemt zorg voor jongen eerste broedsel over).
