Buiten broedtijd
Tjiftjaf is in toenemende mate wintergast in ons land. In milde winters overwinteren tegenwoordig honderden Tjiftjaffen in ons land, met name in het westen en zuiden en in het rivierengebied. Ze zoeken veelal stedelijk gebied op of struweel en ruigte nabij water. De weggetrokken vogels keren in maart terug, met jaarlijkse verschillen tot enkele weken afhankelijk van het weer in die maand. De voorjaarstrek, waarbij ook noordelijke vogels betrokken zijn, houdt in het binnenland aan tot eind april en langs de kust tot half mei. De najaarstrek begint in augustus en piekt in de tweede helft van september en begin oktober. Eind oktober is de meeste trek voorbij.
Broedtijd
Hoewel de soort in het hele land broedt, bereikt de Tjiftjaf vooral hoge dichtheden in goed ontwikkelde loofbossen met veel ondergroei, in het bijzonder op de kleigronden. Maar het is ook een gewone broedvogel van tuinen en parken in stedelijk gebied en singels en bosjes op het platteland. Daardoor kon Tjiftjaf zich sinds ongeveer 1975 ook vestigen in voorheen te kale gebieden in West- en Noord-Nederland. Toegenomen verstedelijking en beplanting speelden de soort hier in de kaart. De landelijke aantallen nemen al tientallen jaren toe, echter met soms forse en moeilijk verklaarbare inzinkingen.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Common Chiffchaff.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Common Chiffchaff in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Zang [broedcode 2] (doorgaans vanuit boom of andere hogere zangpost, niet zelden binnen enkele meters van nest), aangevuld met nestbouw [brc 9] (door vrouwtje, begeleid door – vaak zingend – mannetje), alarm [brc 7], transport van voedsel of ontlastingspakketje [brc 14] (vaak beide partners). Dichtheden kunnen hoog zijn in sommige habitats (halfopen duinen, heide met veel opslag, grienden etc.).
LET OP: doortrek mogelijk tot eind april; doortrekkers zingen echter weinig en houden zich veelal in kleine groepjes op in ongeschikte habitat zoals oevers van beken en sloten.
Bijzonderheden
Voortdurend zacht roepende vogel (vloeiend 'wiet'), zich vanuit boom/struik naar beneden en vervolgens laag door de vegetatie verplaatsend, is vaak een vrouwtje op weg naar het nest. Let op aanwezigheid nestmateriaal of voedsel in de bek (maar het kan ook gaan om een vrouwtje met eieren gaan dat niets bij zich heeft en 'spoorloos' tussen vegetatie verdwijnt).
Broedbiologie
Broedt in bossen en allerlei halfopen landschappen met bomen en struiken, inclusief stedelijk gebied. Eileg van half april tot eind juni, met piek eind april/eerste helft mei. Twee broedsels per jaar, meestal 4-6 eieren, broedduur 14-15 dagen, nestjongenperiode 14-16 dagen, jongen worden nog 10-14 na uitvliegen verzorgd.
