Occurrence description
Buiten broedtijd
De eerste Spotvogels arriveren in de laatste dagen van april, veel vaker in de eerste weken van mei. Tot begin juni kunnen zich nog Spotvogels vestigen, maar van doortrek uit andere landen is amper sprake: ons land ligt aan de uiterste rand van het verspreidingsgebied. De soort vertrekt in de loop van augustus of begin september.
Broedtijd
De Spotvogel broedt door het hele land, met een voorkeur voor klei- en veengronden. In tegenstelling tot de meeste zangers wordt open boerenland met erfbeplanting en singels geprefereerd boven bosgebieden. Jonge aanplant (loofbos) kan echter tijdelijk dicht bezet zijn, ook in stedelijk gebied (parken in aanleg). De landelijke aantallen nemen sinds 1975 of eerder af. Dit vormt onderdeel van een proces dat heel West-Europa beslaat. Het wijst op noordwaartse verschuiving van broedgebied, mogelijk door klimatologische oorzaken. De afname bij ons heeft niet te maken met concurrentie met de naar het noorden oprukkende Orpheusspotvogel.
Birds directive
Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Icterine Warbler.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Icterine Warbler in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Zang (doorgaans vanuit hogere struik of boom, niet zelden vlakbij toekomstig nest) en aanwijzingen voor nest: vooral alarmroep (opvallend 'dideroit', bij nest veelvuldig te horen). Voorts (maar lastig waarneembaar): transport van nestmateriaal, voedsel (ook: broedend vrouwtje dat door mannetje wordt gevoerd) en uitwerpselpakketjes.
LET OP: wellicht enige doortrek tot in juni (pas op met zingende vogels in atypische biotopen als gesloten oud bos). Anderzijds: broedvogels kunnen kort na aankomst beginnen met nestbouw (vooral in mooi voorjaar), waarna de zang stilvalt. Let bij latere bezoeken speciaal op alarmroep.
Bijzonderheden
Broedbegin (en daarmee samenhangend: piek in zangactiviteit voorafgaand aan eileg) jaarlijks nogal fluctuerend (laat bij aanhoudend nat en koud weer in mei).
Broedbiologie
Broedt in halfopen landschappen, zowel agrarisch cultuurlandschap met veel struiken (incl. erven) als natuurgebied (bosranden, open bos, verlandend moeras) en stedelijk gebied (jonge groenvoorzieningen). Eileg van half mei tot in juli, met piek eind mei en eerste helft juni. Eén tot twee broedsels per jaar, meestal 4-5 eieren, broedduur 12-14 dagen, nestjongenperiode 13-15 dagen, jongen worden nog enige tijd na uitvliegen gevoerd.
