This chart is based on the Atlas of the Dutch Birds (1987), an estimate of the numbers present is given for each atlas square of 5x5 km.

Buiten broedtijd
De eerste Boompiepers zijn niet voor eind maart te verwachten en de grote massa komt in april aan. Doortrek vindt plaats tot half mei, met de piek eind april en begin mei. Langs de kust kan bij krachtige (zuid)oostenwinden stuwing optreden, met name bij Breskens en de Eemshaven. Vanaf eind juli worden de broedplaatsen gaandeweg ontruimd. Tussen half augustus en begin oktober trekken grote aantallen door, vooral over de zuidoostelijke helft van het land. De trekpiek valt eind augustus en eerste helft september.
Broedtijd
Op de zandgronden is de Boompieper een karakteristieke broedvogel van heidevelden en duinen met enige opslag. Voorts nestelt hij (ten dele ook buiten de zandgronden) op kaalslagen, in jonge aanplant en soms ook bosjes en wegbeplanting in boerenland. Ook verdrogende en verbossende laagveenmoerassen worden bezet. De soort verloor in de afgelopen tientallen jaren terrein in vooral het Deltagebied, het rivierengebied en delen van Zuid-Limburg, maar was daar nooit erg talrijk. In de voor de Boompieper belangrijker kerngebieden op de zandgronden van Oost- en Zuid-Nederland ontwikkelden de aantallen zich positief.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Tree Pipit.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Tree Pipit in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Zang (vanaf geëxponeerde zangposten omhoog en in parachutevlucht dalend), alarm (regelmatig, zeurderig 'ti..ti..', soms versnellend; zowel door waakzame man bij broedende vrouw als door beide oudervogels in omgeving nest), nestbouw (door vrouwtje, begeleid door mannetje), transport van voedsel/ontlastingspakketje (beide partners; laatste/eerste deel naar/vanaf nest wordt lopend afgelegd).
LET OP: doortrek tot in mei en vanaf eind juli. Doortrekkers houden zich veelal in afwijkende habitat op, zingen zelden, maar laten wel veelvuldig contactroep horen ('psiee').
Bijzonderheden
In halfopen landschap bestaat voor minder ervaren waarnemer enig gevaar voor verwisseling met Graspieper. Boompieper zingt steeds vanuit boom, struik etc. (graspieper veelvuldig vanaf de grond), heeft melodieuzere zang (met kenmerkende 'sia..sia'uithalers) en heeft kenmerkende explosieve contactroep (luid 'psiee'; Graspieper heeft nerveuze 'swie..swie'roepjes).
Broedbiologie
Nestelt in (half)open landschappen met verspreide boomgroei en gebroken kruidlaag (heide, jonge aanplant/opslag, brede bermen). Eileg van eind april tot begin juli. Een tot twee broedsels per jaar, meestal 5 eieren, broedduur 12-14 dagen, nestjongenperiode 10-12 dagen; jongen kunnen nest verlaten voordat ze kunnen vliegen, worden nog tot 20 dagen na uitvliegen gevoerd.
