Data derived from waterbird monitoring scheme (mostly monthly counts during winter). Shown is the monthly average number of birds for for the last five seasons. For each month is indicated which part is counted and what part is estimated (calculated using statistical methods). The red line shows the multi-year mean. This is the average over all months of the season, from July to June of the last five seasons. Months without estimation (indicated by ?) it is assumed that there were no birds.

Buiten broedtijd
Buiten de broedtijd verschijnen Roodhalsfuten op allerlei zoete en zoute wateren, doorgaans solitair of met enkele exemplaren bijeen. Landelijk gaat het om niet meer dan enkele tientallen vogels. Het Deltagebied is het best bedeeld, met name de zoute en brakke wateren. In het binnenland is de soort schaars, al zijn er plassen waar hij jaarlijks opduikt. De landelijke aantallen kenden een toename in de tweede helft van de jaren negentig, maar daalden vervolgens weer.
Broedtijd
Vanaf 1985 broeden jaarlijks Roodhalsfuten in ons land, na drie broedgevallen eerder in de eeuw. Ondanks relatief goede broedresultaten bleven de aantallen aanvankelijk klein, aar de Nederlandse broedpopulatie groeit nog steeds. Het overgrote deel van de broedgevallen vond plaats op vennen en vloeivelden in Drenthe. Elders gaat het om solitaire, soms baltsende vogels, en een incidentele broedpoging. De vestiging van de Roodhalsfuut in Nederland ligt in het verlengde van een toename en uitbreiding aan de westrand van het hoofdverspreidingsgebied. Dat reikt tot in Noordwest-Duitsland.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Red-necked Grebe.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Red-necked Grebe in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Paren in geschikt broedbiotoop (vennen, duinmeren, moeras) met kijker volgen en opletten of er aanwijzingen voor nest zijn (balts, slepen met nestmateriaal, copulatie). Idem bij zich verdacht gedragend individu (territoriumindicerend).
LET OP: Waterral-achtige baltsroep, vaak vanuit oevervegetatie. Dodaars-achtig gedrag: broedvogels kunnen spoorloos verdwenen lijken na aanvang van broeden. Blijf het gebied na het schijnbare verdwijnen van de soort daarom bezoeken en bekijk (met telescoop) oevervegetaties nauwkeurig. Eventueel geluiden afspelen. Drijvend nest, soms nogal open en goed zichtbaar, soms goed verstopt in vegetatie. Voor definitieve nestbouw plaatsvindt worden 1-3 platforms gebouwd die gebruikt worden voor paring. Bij grote jongen opletten of ze nog gevoerd worden. Vliegvlugge jonge vogels zijn geen bewijs voor broeden ter plaatse.
Nieuwe broedterreinen kunnen tot in juni worden bezet. Overzomeraars prefereren veelal grote open wateren zonder duidelijk broedbiotoop.
Documentatie
Van de bekende Drentse broedplaatsen graag de hoogst vastgestelde broedcode opgeven. Elders is meer uitgebreide documentatie nodig; geef waarnemingen per datum door.
Bijzonderheden
Soort broedt vanaf jaren tachtig jaarlijks in ons land, met alleen in Drenthe broedplaatsen die over reeksen van jaren bezet zijn.
Broedbiologie
Nestelend in veelal kleine stilstaande wateren met uitgebreide oevervegetaties. In Nederland vooral op vennen en vloeivelden, ook wel in duinplassen of moerassen op klei, in Duitsland ook in zeer kleine plassen (vanaf 0,1 ha) in bos. Enige voorkeur aldaar voor nieuw ontstane wateren.
Meestal één broedsel per jaar, soms twee (in elkaar geschoven) broedsels. Eileg (Duitsland!) vooral eind april-eind mei, vervolg-/tweede broedsels tot in juli. Doorgaans 3-4 eieren, broedduur 20-27 dagen, jongen zelfstandig na 8-10 weken.
