Buiten broedtijd
Hoppen worden het meest gezien in de trekperiode, wanneer Zuid- en Midden-Europese vogels wel eens over hun broedgebied heen schieten. De meeste waarnemingen stammen uit april-begin mei en september-begin oktober. Dat er relatief veel Hoppen uit de kuststreek worden gemeld, heeft deels te maken met de hoge waarnemersdichtheid daar. Er zijn enkele winterwaarnemingen bekend.
Broedtijd
De Hop was begin twintigste eeuw lokaal een bekende broedvogel. De aantallen namen echter sterk af, met oplevingen in sommige perioden zoals rond 1950. Omstreeks 1973 verdween de soort als jaarlijkse broedvogel. Sindsdien zijn slechts enkele malen zekere broedgevallen geconstateerd, waaronder in 1995 in Noord-Brabant. Omdat de Hop ook elders in West- en Midden-Europa sterk in aantal afneemt, is het verrassend dat het aantal waarnemingen van roepende vogels bij ons recent toeneemt. Het kan deels om ongepaarde en rondzwervende vogels gaan, maar een succesvol broedgeval in 2012 in Noord-Limburg toont aan dat het deels om 'serieuze' broedpogingen gaat.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Eurasian Hoopoe.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Eurasian Hoopoe in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Attent zijn bij late voorjaarswaarnemingen, speciaal bij roepende vogel [broedcode 2], zich verdacht gedragend individu [brc 1] en paar [brc 3]. Let op nestindicerend gedrag, onder andere een vogel met voer [brc 14] (mannetje verzorgt broedend vrouwtje totdat jongen dikke week oud zijn, daarna voedseltransport door beide partners). Oppassen voor ongepaarde vogel (ongepaarde man roept veelvuldig, terwijl een broedvogel na korte periode zwijgzaam is). Vliegvlugge jongen (herkenbaar aan kortere snavel) zijn binnen enkele dagen zelfstandig; let op aanwezigheid oudervogels [brc 12].

Bijzonderheden
Bij vermoeden van nest dit met rust laten. Nest is na uitvliegen van de jongen aan de stank goed herkenbaar.
Broedbiologie
Broedend in (half)open extensief cultuurlandschap op zandgronden met voldoende aanbod aan nestholen, zowel oude spechtenholen (Groene Specht) als steenhopen, brokkelige muren, nestkasten etc. Eileg half april tot in juni. Eén tot twee broedsels per jaar, meestal 5-8 eieren, broedduur 14-16 dagen, nestjongenperiode 26-30 dagen.
