Buiten broedtijd
Waarnemingen werden tot en met 1992 beoordeeld door de Commissie Dwaalgasten Nederlandse Avifauna, daarna geregistreerd door Sovon en Waarneming.nl. Bijeneters worden in ons land vrijwel uitsluitend waargenomen tussen eind april en half oktober. Ongeveer de helft van de waarnemingen valt in mei en begin juni, met de beste kansen bij aanhoudende winden tussen zuid en oost. Eind juli en begin augustus is er een kleine opleving. Relatief veel waarnemingen stammen uit het kustgebied. Meestal gaat het om solitaire vogels of duo's, een enkele maal om groepen tot een tiental of meer.
Broedtijd
De Bijeneter nestelde in 1964 voor het eerst in ons land. Sinds 2010 broedt de soort jaarlijks in Nederland. Het gaat bij ons per jaar vooralsnog om hooguit 10-15 broedparen, die doorgaans een zandafgraving uitkiezen. De vestiging in ons land past binnen een noordwaartse uitbreidingstendens in Europa, mogelijk samenhangend met klimaatverandering.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the European Bee-eater.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the European Bee-eater in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle waarnemingen in geschikt biotoop (vliegende vogels met kijker volgen), speciaal letten op aanwezigheid individu [broedcode 1] of paar [brc 3] in geschikt broedbiotoop (let op 'pruu...pruu' roep), balts [brc 2], nestbouw [brc 9], voedseltransport [brc 14] en bezoek nesthol [brc 13] (jongen zitten in late broedfase in opening [brc 16]).
LET OP: attentie bij waarneming in de ruime omgeving van steilranden (potentiële broedplaats). Controleer oeverzwaluwkolonies bij waarneming van pleisterende Bijeneter. Holen van succesvolle broedparen zijn ook na de broedtijd in augustus-september nog herkenbaar (resten van grotere insecten in en onder hol, duidelijke pootsporen).

Bijzonderheden
Soort broedt tegenwoordig jaarlijks met enkele paren in ons land, al blijven succesvolle broedpogingen zeldzaam. Gezien ontwikkelingen in omringende landen is een verdere toename in aantal broedgevallen te verwachten.
Broedbiologie
Nestelend in steilwanden van groeves en rivieren. Eileg eind april tot eind juni. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 5-7 eieren, broedduur 20-22 dagen, nestjongenperiode 31-33 dagen. Soortgenoten (ongepaarde vogels, en mislukte broedvogels) kunnen helpen bij aandragen voedsel. Paren met uitgevlogen jongen blijven vaak nog enige tijd in (zeer ruime) omgeving van broedplaats hangen.
