This map is derived from the Bird Atlas of the Netherlands (Sovon 2018). For each atlas square of 5x5 km, an estimate for the number of wintering birds is given.

Buiten broedtijd
Alken zijn aan zout water gebonden en vertonen zich vrijwel alleen langs de kust. De soort is hier het talrijkst van oktober tot en met april. De meeste vogels worden langsvliegend gezien, maar zijn door waarnemingsomstandigheden lastig te onderscheiden van Zeekoeten. Soms passeren duizenden 'alk/zeekoeten' per dag. De verhouding tussen Alk en Zeekoet is 1:100-150, maar het aandeel Alken neemt naar het einde van de winter toe. Waarnemingen in het binnenland, steevast van uitgeputte vogels, zijn uitermate zeldzaam.

Deze factsheet bevat ecologische kerninformatie over een vogelsoort die betrokken is bij de doelen voor Natura 2000-gebieden, resulterend in beleidsadviezen voor het halen van de doelen van de Europese Vogelrichtlijn. Bij sommige vogelsoorten zijn factsheets opgesteld voor twee populaties, namelijk de broed- én de doortrek- en/of winterpopulatie. Elke factsheet gaat in op de Staat van Instandhouding (SvI), de eventuele opgave om de populatie op een gunstig niveau te brengen, de belangrijkste knelpunten en op (potentiële) verbetermaatregelen. Voorts wordt ingegaan op het deel van de populatie dat verblijft in het Natura 2000-netwerk, het overige Natuurnetwerk Nederland (NNN) en overige gebieden, en op het regionaal/provinciaal belang.
