Buiten broedtijd
Ortolanen worden vrijwel alleen op trek gezien, vooral in het najaar. De meeste passeren eind augustus en in de eerste helft van september, met enkele nakomers tot begin oktober. Waarnemingen worden vooral gedaan langs de kust en in de zuidoosthelft van het land, door trektellers die bekend zijn met de onopvallende vluchtroepjes. Ortolanen blijken vooral ’s nachts door te trekken. Voorjaarstrekkers duiken eind april en in vooral de eerste helft van mei op.
Broedtijd
De Ortolaan was tot halverwege de twintigste eeuw een broedvogel van kleinschalig boerenland met roggeakkers en eikenwallen op de zandgronden. De belangrijkste broedgebieden lagen in de Achterhoek, Midden-Brabant en de noordelijke helft van Limburg. Ondanks een gerapporteerde afname nestelden er rond 1950 naar schatting nog 1500 paren in Nederland. Dat aantal nam af tot zo'n 200 in 1975 en 30 rond 1990. Schaalvergroting in de landbouw en overgang van granen op mais betekenden de doodklap voor de Ortolaan. De laatste zekere broedgevallen vonden plaats in 1999. Sindsdien worden nog enkele keren onregelmatig zingende, ongepaarde Ortolanen waargenomen in de voormalige broedgebieden. De soort is in vrijwel heel West- en Midden-Europa op zijn retour.

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Ortolan Bunting.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Ortolan Bunting in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle waarnemingen in geschikt biotoop (kleinschalig cultuurland met veel zomergranen en loofsingels) noteren, met speciale aandacht voor zang (vaak vanaf hoge zangpost, soms vanaf kluit op bodem; baltsvluchtje tussen verschillende zanposten), nestbouw of voedseltransport.
Broedvogels zingen lang door (tot aan uitkomen der eieren); let bij zingende vogel op of hij gepaard is of niet (ongepaarde vogel zingt veel frequenter en heeft minder binding aan bepaalde plekken). Familie met stuntelig vliegende jongen is indicatie voor broedsel ter plaatse.
Documentatie
Soort is als broedvogel inmiddels uitgestorven in Nederland, maar een incidenteel geval is niet uitgesloten. Uitgebreide documentatie noodzakelijk met hoogste broedcode per datum. BELANGRIJK: vermeldt of het om een ongepaarde vogel dan wel een paar ging.
Bijzonderheden
Door grondbewerking of vegetatiegroei kunnen verplaatsingen tot eind mei optreden.
Broedbiologie
Gebonden aan kleinschalig cultuurland op droge bodem; Nederlandse vestigingen op heide betroffen wellicht ongepaarde mannetjes. Bodemnest meestal in rogge of wintergerst, evt. in andere lage vegetatie (bij begin nestbouw niet hoger dan 15 cm). Eileg half mei tot eind juni, vooral tweede helft mei. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 3-6 eieren, broedduur 11-12 dagen, nestjongenperiode 8-10 dagen, jongen na ca. 14 dagen vliegvlug.
