Buiten broedtijd
De Nederlandse Gaaien zijn standvogel en komen in de hoogste dichtheden voor in het oosten van het land. Ze vallen buiten de broedtijd het meest op in de herfst, wanneer ze soms kilometerlange pendeltochten maken om eikels te zoeken en te verstoppen als wintervoorraad. Periodiek treden invasies op vanuit Oost-, Midden- of Noord-Europa. Zulke invasies kondigen zich doorgaans half september aan en pieken in oktober. De vliegrichting van de zwoegende groepjes Gaaien kan ZW zijn maar ook NW. Grote invasies traden op in 1972, 1983, 1996, 2004, 2010, 2012, 2019 en 2021. De terugtrek na een invasie vindt grotendeels in april plaats maar omvat veel kleinere aantallen.
Broedtijd
Gaaien zijn het talrijkst in bosrijke gebieden en nestelen graag in dichte opstanden. Ze zijn echter ook volop te vinden in kleinschalig agrarisch cultuurland en in groen dooraderde bebouwing, en ontbreken alleen in de meest boomloze landschappen. Sinds ongeveer 1975 breidde de soort zich uit over grote delen van West- en Noord-Nederland waar hij voordien schaars was of ontbrak. De aanplant van singels en (recreatie)bos speelde de Gaai hier in de kaart, net als de verstedelijking met bijbehorende groenvoorziening. Verminderde jachtdruk vormt regionaal een aanvullende reden. Op de hoge gronden bleven aantallen en verspreiding ongewijzigd. Opmerkelijk genoeg zijn Gaaien op Schiermonnikoog bijzonder schaars.
Birds directive
Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the Eurasian Jay.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the Eurasian Jay in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle waarnemingen noteren, met nadruk op roepende vogel [broedcode 1] (luide schorre roep; indien tweemaal kort na elkaar vaak bedoeld als alarm[brc 7], paren [brc 3] (maar zie hieronder), zang [brc 2] en aanwijzingen voor nest: nestbouw [brc 9], transport van voedsel [brc 14] (in krop, soms zichtbaar bij vliegende vogel; mannetje voert broedend vrouwtje, beide vogels voeren jongen) of ontlastingspakketje [brc 14].
LET OP: groepsbalts, waarbij kleine groepjes Gaaien luid krijsend door het bos vliegen, is moeilijk te interpreteren. Vogels steken tijdens groepsbalts open gebieden over, kunnen van ver buiten gebied zelf komen en bestaan vermoedelijk deels uit (nog) ongepaarde individuen. Groepen kunnen dus niet worden uitgesplitst in broedparen ter plaatse. Teken bij vliegende individuen of paren de vliegrichting in [bepaal locatie en voeg richting vliegbeweging via opmerkingenveld in].
Bijzonderheden
Soort is tijdens broeden buitengewoon stiekem. Daarom moeten alle waarnemingen genoteerd worden.
Broedbiologie
Broedt in allerlei bossen, ook wel in kleinschalig cultuurland met struwelen en bomen, en in parken en tuinen in stedelijk gebied. Eileg van half april tot in juni. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 4-6 eieren, broedduur 16-21 dagen, nestjongenperiode 19-22 dagen, jongen op leeftijd van 6-8 weken zelfstandig.
