Buiten broedtijd

In de eerste tien jaren van de 21e eeuw verbleven er enkele tientallen Heilige Ibissen in ons land. Ze werden voornamelijk gezien in de omgeving van de broedplaatsen, soms echter op grotere afstand. Vanaf ongeveer 2010, samenvallend met het terug vangen van de vogels, is het aantal sterk gedaald. De enkele vogels die daarna nog werden gezien, kunnen van Nederlandse of Franse oorsprong zijn.

Broedtijd

Uit collecties ontsnapte Heilige Ibissen deden vanaf 2001 broedpogingen, die in 2003 voor het eerst jonge vogels opleverden. Maximaal werden 12 nesten gemaakt, in 2007, verdeeld over drie locaties. De vogels waren merendeels afkomstig uit het vogelpark Avifauna bij Alphen a/d Rijn. Vanaf 2009 werden ze zo veel mogelijk terug gevangen, en vanaf 2010 worden geen broedgevallen meer gemeld. Wel zwerven er in de broedtijd nog solitaire vogels of duo's rond. Die kunnen, zo blijkt uit ringaflezingen, afkomstig zijn uit West-Frankrijk. Hier nestelen meer dan 1000 paren Heilige Ibissen, eveneens van oorsprong uit gevangenschap afkomstig. Vanaf 2006 is begonnen met het indammen van deze populatie.

Conservation status

No conservation status applies to this species. The African Sacred Ibis is an exotic species and therefore falls outside Article 1 of the Birds Directive, which relates to all natural wild bird species on the European territory of the EU Member States. The African Sacred Ibis is therefore not protected under the Nature Conservation Act.
