Buiten broedtijd
In zachte winters overwinteren kleine aantallen in Nederland, vooral in de zuidelijke helft. In strenge winters is de soort vrijwel afwezig. De eigen broedvogels, die merendeels wegtrekken tot in Noord-Afrika, komen vanaf eind februari (zachte winters) of maart (koudere winters) terug. Tegelijkertijd treedt doortrek van noordoostelijke vogels op. De trek kent een hoogtepunt in de tweede helft van maart en houdt aan tot half april. Vanaf juli verzamelen zich groepjes, veelal jonge vogels, op voedselrijke plekken. Ze gebruiken gemeenschappelijke slaapplaatsen tot enkele honderden vogels. De meeste trek vindt plaats tussen half september en half oktober, met de hoogste aantallen gewoonlijk langs de oostgrens.
Broedtijd
De Witte Kwikstaart is een van de meest verspreide broedvogels. De soort heeft de breedste habitatkeus onder de Nederlandse broedvogels, maar komt nergens in hoge dichtheden voor. De soort nestelt vooral op het platteland, vaak op gebouwen of onder bruggen, en met een voorkeur voor de kleinschaliger landschapstypen. Hij bewoont echter ook natuurgebieden, waaronder stuifzanden, duinen of grote kaalslagen in bos, en soms ook stedelijk gebied. De landelijke stand is afgenomen maar er zijn grote regionale trendverschillen. In stuifzand- en duingebieden kan hij slecht uit de voeten met vergrassing of vermossing (effecten van atmosferische depositie).

Conservation status
The Birds Directive focuses on the conservation of all naturally occurring wild bird species in Europe, including the White Wagtail.
This means that EU Member States must take measures to maintain or bring the populations of these species to a level that corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
The Birds Directive requires Member States to maintain habitats for birds of sufficient size and quality, including through the designation of Special Protection Areas for the benefit of the European Natura 2000 network. No special protection zones have been designated for the White Wagtail in the Netherlands. The national population must be able to maintain itself at a favorable level.

Aanwijzingen
Alle waarnemingen met nadruk op individu [broedcode 1] of paar [brc 3] in broedbiotoop (vooral roepende vogel(s) op dak, bij brug, en andere potentiële broedplaatsen), zang [brc 2] (nogal ingetogen en onopvallend, soms echter druk tijdens balts of in vlucht) en aanwijzingen voor nest: nestbouw [brc 9] (vooral door vrouwtje), alarm [brc 7] (fel reagerend op roofvogels en kraaien, soms in gezamenlijke actie met buurtparen achtervolgd), transport van voedsel of uitwerpselpakketje [brc 14] (beide partners).
LET OP: doortrek tot ver in april. Doortrekkers veelal in groepjes op akker en graslanden, zonder duidelijke binding aan bijvoorbeeld bouwwerken [niet invoeren of brc 0]. Broedparen in natuurlijke habitats (stuifzand, open duin, ook wel grote kaalslag) vaak onopvallend. Voedseltransport kan over vele honderden meters plaatsvinden en zegt dus weinig (maar let op waar de vogels naartoe gaan). Paren met uitgevlogen jongen alleen meetellen [brc 12] als deze (zeer) korte staartjes hebben (kunnen anders forse afstanden afgelegd hebben).
Bijzonderheden
Soort wordt door onopvallende zang gemakkelijk gemist. Speciale aandacht voor potentiële broedplaatsen (boerderijen, schuurtjes, bruggen, opslagplaatsen, soms ook geknotte wilgen en takken- of steenstapels) in april en begin mei kan voor duidelijkheid zorgen.
Broedbiologie
Broedt in open tot halfopen landschappen, zowel natuurgebied (stuivend duin, schrale heide) als agrarisch cultuurland (met schuurtjes, bruggen etc.) en bebouwing. Eileg van begin april tot half juli, met pieken eind april-eind mei en tweede helft juni. Twee tot drie broedsels per jaar, meestal 4-6 eieren, broedduur 12-14 dagen, nestjongenperiode 13-14 dagen, jongen worden na uitvliegen nog 4-7 dagen gevoerd.
