Buiten broedtijd
Jan-van-Genten zijn pure zeevogels die zich slechts incidenteel in het binnenland vertonen. Langs de Noordzeekust is de soort het hele jaar te zien maar vertoont hij zich het meest van begin september tot half november. Het gaat zowel om trekkers als vissende vogels (vaak achter vissersschepen). De grootste aantallen worden gezien bij harde aanlandige winden. De jaarlijkse verschillen zijn echter groot. De jaren met de hoogste aantallen vallen samen met een rijk aanbod aan voedsel, vooral jonge haring.

Deze factsheet bevat ecologische kerninformatie over een vogelsoort die betrokken is bij de doelen voor Natura 2000-gebieden, resulterend in beleidsadviezen voor het halen van de doelen van de Europese Vogelrichtlijn. Bij sommige vogelsoorten zijn factsheets opgesteld voor twee populaties, namelijk de broed- én de doortrek- en/of winterpopulatie. Elke factsheet gaat in op de Staat van Instandhouding (SvI), de eventuele opgave om de populatie op een gunstig niveau te brengen, de belangrijkste knelpunten en op (potentiële) verbetermaatregelen. Voorts wordt ingegaan op het deel van de populatie dat verblijft in het Natura 2000-netwerk, het overige Natuurnetwerk Nederland (NNN) en overige gebieden, en op het regionaal/provinciaal belang.
