This map is derived from the annual survey of colonial and rare breeding birds. For each atlas square of 5x5 km the most counted number of breeding pairs is given.

For each month is indicated which part is counted and what part is estimated (calculated using statistical methods). The red line shows the multi-year mean. This is the average over all months of the season, from July to June of the last five seasons. Months without estimation (indicated by ?) it is assumed that there were no birds.

Buiten broedtijd
De verspreiding buiten de broedtijd wijkt weinig af van die in de broedtijd, met het accent op Noord-Holland. Gedrag en trend komen overeen met die van Grote Canadese Gans. De bij Grote Canadese Gans genoemde ruitrek lijkt bij Kleine Canadese Gans niet op te treden.
Broedtijd
Determinatie van Kleine Canadese Ganzen is niet altijd gemakkelijk. In feite betreft het verschillende ondersoorten terwijl mengparen met Grote Canadese Gans, Grauwe Gans en Brandgans jongen voortbrengen met hybride kenmerken. Vogels met min of meer zuivere kenmerken zijn veel schaarser dan Grote Canadese Ganzen. Ze concentreren zich vooral in Laag-Nederland, met name Noord-Holland. De aantallen zijn in de afgelopen decennia gegroeid, al kunnen bestrijdingsacties lokaal een dempend effect hebben.

Conservation status
No conservation status applies to this species. The Cackling Goose is an exotic species and therefore falls outside Article 1 of the Birds Directive, which relates to all natural wild bird species on the European territory of the EU Member States. The Cackling Goose is therefore not protected under the Nature Conservation Act.

Aanwijzingen
Paren en broedverdachte individuen in broedbiotoop; let op territoriaal of nestindicerend gedrag, vooral wakende, baltsende en alarmerende individuen/paren op en boven broedplaats en nest met broedende vogel.
Bij concentraties is het soms mogelijk om nesten te tellen. Tel alle bezette nesten (met broedende of wakende vogel). Nesten met eieren en gave maar lege nesten (intacte droge donslaag) in principe meetellen (maar lastig te onderscheiden van andere soorten). Beschadigde of oude lege nesten niet meetellen (ingezakte of natte donslaag, nest scheef; nest is mislukt en wellicht gevolgd door nieuwe broedpoging).
LET OP: paar met (kleine) jongen kan kilometers hebben afgelegd en vormt geen bewijs van broeden ter plaatse. Mengparen meetellen.
Documentatie
Status in Nederland onduidelijk. Vaak is het niet duidelijk of het om Kleine Canadese Ganzen gaat dan wel hybriden (bijv. Grote Canadese Gans x Brandgans: kan opvallend klein zijn). Het is zinvol om duidelijke gevallen te documenteren met foto of beschrijving. Voorts is het zinvol om te controleren of aspecten van de broedbiologie inderdaad overeenkomen met die van Grote Canadese Gans, zoals hieronder verondersteld.
Bijzonderheden
Kleine Canadese Gans is in feite verzamelnaam van verschillende ondersoorten die moeilijk te onderscheiden zijn en waarvan de status onduidelijk is.
Broedbiologie
Weinig over bekend, vermoedelijk ongeveer als Grote Canadese Gans. In dat geval zowel solitair nestelend als in kleine kolonies. Eileg vooral april en mei. Eén broedsel per jaar, meestal 4-6 eieren, broedduur 28-30 dagen, jongen na 40-50 dagen vliegvlug. Familieverband blijft minimaal tot volgende voorjaar gehandhaafd.
