Ontsnapte Japanse Nachtegalen worden vooral in stedelijke omgeving gezien, waar ze door hun zang opvallen. Broedgevallen zijn incidenteel bekend (Diemen 1999) maar lijken niet toe te nemen.

The Red-billed Leiothrix is an exotic species and therefore falls outside Article 1 of the Birds Directive, which relates to all natural wild bird species on the European territory of the EU Member States. The Red-billed Leiothrix is therefore not protected under the Nature Conservation Act.
